RR will be back for the summer 2009 season on wmbr, after a spring hiatus. i'll be trying to return to a more experimental format, definitely moving away from strictly traditional jazz playlists to more radical/mixed sounds. sort of like sounds from the beginning of the show, but more mature now. it is the same time, sunday nights at 8 after r&b jukebox and before musical dope. playlists will be here too. last show of the spring 2008 season for me. i am traveling the spaceways on thursday morning to return home for the summer. this show was quite enjoyable for me; funky experimental sounds all the way to a horace silver ballad and the essential sun ra. i didn't play any bill evans or mandrill, but that can wait. good music is endless, you know. also happy birthday to cecil mcbee. i hope the summer will prove to be both productive and relaxing. that is, if i survive these next few days. anyways, hope you've enjoyed listening as much as i've enjoyed putting these things together. i'll be back in the fall with some secret slabs to display. until then, this is real life.

today is irving berlin's birthday. and, oddly, it is carla bley's birthday too. the music tonight was generally jazzy-funky. i was happy to host don byron on the program. we discussed his love for mandrill and his musical origins from about 9-9:30. thanks again don for stopping by. he has been a visiting professor at mit and i've learned a great deal by working with him. listen to the archive if you'd like to hear his opinion about early jazz clarinet sounds, pierre boulez and the new york philharmonic, west indian boat rides around manhattan, growing up in the bronx in the 70s, and his early musical activities.

again, friends, i am unable to present another incarnation of RR this week. i am playing in a combo for a concert on campus. we are playing "evidence" by thelonious sphere monk. it is unfortunate that i have had to miss the last two weeks in april, but playing music live does win out over playing it on the air. the best part about this, though, is that captain al and ré are going to split my time so there will be a huge block of sweet soul music on the radio waves tonight. i will definitely be back on the first sunday in may to finish out the season with a bang. hope you all will tune in then.

that latin bit tonight for the last half of the program, possibly because my father is in peru at the moment. i thought manteca meant "grease," but rob told me it meant heroin. good to know. this show was a bit rough around the edges, but it had some nice stuff and i definitely liked the flow. runja told me about "bulletpoints" and i really dig it a lot. also: the amiri baraka composition blew me away. i won't be here next week but there will be good stuff on—always funky on sunday nights here at wmbr.

on january 9 and 23, my colleague william kulhman provided the music for the evening. many thanks to him for covering those episodes. it takes a little help from my friends during the school breaks to continue this radio adventure and i am grateful for their presence.

this is the last program of 2007 for me. the school semester is over and i am running, returning back to texas for a lovely winter break full of fun. but fear not—wmbr djs will be on hand for the next five editions of this program. their identities will remain hidden now, but i have no doubt that their musical peregrinations will be exciting and worthwhile. their playlists will also be posted on this website.

i enjoyed this last program; it was a bit rough but it also had some nice moments. since it is now december 21, happy birthday to frank zappa too. my program stretched about 13 minutes past midnight and then i signed off, so if you'd like to hear the tail end of the program, listen to hex enduction hour's archive. also in the beginning i promised some steve grossman but i never got around to that; i'll save that for my next edition of the program. see you in the new year—be well.

The last edition of RR for this semester. Another show with a diversity of flavors. Most of the tracks here go out to the original RR. Some parts were a little rough, but next week's show, being my last one for the season, will be tight. Only a few more days until the plane flight back to Texas. I remember listening to the White Magic album on a flight from Texas and staring down at Long Island. Now I'm flying the other way. Funky up moving on towards tenor madness in the last hour. I had cuts like Art Pepper & Zoot Sims and a scorching live version of "Four Brothers" lined up, but there is never enough time to do everything. Sonny Stitt is my hero lately. One blunder: I mentioned a famous tenor album featuring Al, Zoot, Hank, and Trane, but I mistakenly called it "Tenor Madness." The name of the album is actually "Tenor Conclave." "Tenor Madness" is another famous album that features only Sonny Rollins and Trane on tenor.

It is called the 8th continent and it is a large black storm, shaped like the geode rock you stole from the Boston Science Museum:

Salutations,

The show this week featured Seth, Dana, and Ryan from the amazing Akron/Family. They sat in and picked some records to spin. If you haven't listened, the program is pretty amusing, with me trying to get some real information and the band being completely goofy. Artists spun include: Toumani Diabate, Prince, Pat Metheny, Michael Jackson, Talib Kweli, and others. Blindfold test with artists like Fela Kuti, Charles Mingus, The Free Design, Vinicius de Moraes, Roscoe Holcomb, Savath+Savalas.

Great moments include:

-car repair information from A/F posse member Ed
-Edna St. Vincent Millay mixed forwards and backwards with Albert Ayler
-found percussion jam on staplers, cups, keys, record cleaning supplies, and voice
-intense low frequencies when trying to get the phone line on the air
-celebration of Charles Darwin's birthday and the proclamation that evolution is false

Facts discovered:

-Seth went to Berklee for a while
-members of A/F met in Space Camp
-all members toured with Sun Ra for over 30 years

If you haven't listened to the show on the WMBR archives site, I would suggest you do so. Also their performance on Tuesday at the Middle East upstairs was immensely moving and beautiful, featuring members of the audience climbing up onstage during the last "tune," myself included playing ride cymbal with Dana and finger cymbals. Dancing was required. It was amazing.

Stay tuned as the next show will feature some music pulled by Akron/Family for the last show and possibly some cool new things.

2006 was a great year for live music for me. Moving to Boston for the school semester really helped too. Top concerts of the year include Akron/Family, The Books, The Bad Plus, Cut Chemist, Stereolab, Konono No. 1, and the Dave Holland Quintet. Worst show was probably Ariel Pink. Another cool show was The Weird Weeds in Cambridge at this weird apartment/art gallery in Inman Square with about 5 people there. Other concerts include Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Beck, Jamie Lidell, The Album Leaf, The Octopus Project, Ron Carter, Kurt Rosenwinkel & Mark Turner & Billy Hart, Man Man, Ben Monder, The Fiery Furnaces, Lyrics Born, Edan & Dagha, Matmos & So Percussion, Sonic Youth, Either/Orchestra, John Scofield & Steve Swallow, and probably lots of others in Denton that I forgot about. Dave Holland's Quintet with Nate Smith on drums and Antonio Hart on saxophone—stunning group consciousness
